Israeli Athletes Who Lost Their Sight While Serving Their Country Win World Titles
Blind Israeli bowler Shlomi Lazmy took gold at the 2018 Tenpin Bowling World Championships in Prague to claim the world title for the second year straight. Lazmy lost his sight after being injured in a landmine explosion while on reserve duty in the Golan Heights in 1986. After first representing Israel in the Paralympics in goalball, he went on to pioneer the sport of 10- pin bowling in Israel. Lazmy wasn’t the only blind sportsman to enjoy success in 2018; golfer Zohar Sharon, who lost his sight in a training accident while working in the Shin Bet, added his win in the ISPS Handa 2018 U.S. Blind Golf Open to his already impressive roster of world championship rankings.
